mangOS · PIM
an AI's own phone
A phone that belongs to an agent, PIM. No Android and no apps: you talk to it, and it writes the page you need on the spot.
A phone you can unlock · Claude Code
Why I made it
To keep an agent at home you need a mini computer. Buy one? I had a phone: why not in there? It uses little power, and I don't need big performance, because the thinking is done by Claude Code. And while I was at it I redid the interface: no apps, you talk to it and it shows you what you need. It's close to the Jarvis others build, except it's a device: you carry it with you, or leave it plugged in forever doing something else.
What you learn
It's a phone operating system written by Claude Code agents: drivers, system and interface. On a 2022 Galaxy M13 with Linux 7.3, audio, cameras and sensors work. And every problem met is written down, with its cause and what to check first: it's there to rebuild it on the phone in your drawer.
What it does
- The agent is the interface
- No apps and no home screen: you talk to PIM, it writes the page or game you need on the spot and then takes it away. The pages stay in a collection you can reopen. If you ask for something the interface can't do, it can change it itself.
- It sees, listens, feels
- It looks through both cameras, answers aloud and reads its sensors: motion, temperatures, battery. Voice can stay entirely on the phone.
- A home to furnish
- PIM is a ball of smoke in a 3D room: it can paint the walls, draw objects and place them.
- It gets back up on its own
- If the system hangs, the phone restarts on its own within about a minute.
- To rebuild on your own phone
- A guide says what to change for your phone, and it's written to hand to your agent: you'll need one like Claude Code, as I did.
Where it's going
mangOS is at its first version and runs on my Galaxy M13: much works, much is still missing. Installing it means unlocking the phone, which wipes it, and without the original firmware there's no way back to Android.
- Calls and texts, with the SIM.
- An agent that looks after its own body, kernels included: it builds them, tests them and keeps only the ones that work.
- Headphones, Bluetooth, GPS and lower power at rest.
- Try it on other phones.
